IELTS

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is an international standard test of English language proficiency for non-native English speakers. It is intended for individuals who are interested in non-academic training, gaining work experience, or applying for immigration. The IELTS test is one of the major English language tests in the world, along with TOEFL, TOEIC, and PTE.

Only IELTS is approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa applicants from both within and outside the country. As well as New Zealand and Australia, it is a requirement for immigration.

As part of the IELTS test, there is also a separate Life Skills test offered by the test partners:

The IELTS Academic is designed for students and professionals planning to enroll in English-speaking universities and other institutions of higher education, as well as for those planning to study or practice abroad.

An IELTS General Training qualification can be used for gaining work experience or undertaking non-academic training, or applying for immigration.

Life Skills is designed for individuals who need to prove they are proficient in English at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level A1 or B1 to apply for a “family of a settled person” visa, indefinite leave to remain, or UK citizenship.
